Iowa
Gallery
View of midwest nature Mar/Apr 2007.
These photographs were taken in Eastern Iowa along the Mississippi & Wapsi rivers, including Isaac Walton, Princeton, IA and Lock and Dam 14 in Pleasant Valley IA.
The American White Pelican can now be seen in the spring on and around the waters of the Midwest Mississippi. These are very large birds with wing spans of 5' or more. Since these birds eat chubs, shiners, perch and catfish you will find them near Lock & Dams along the Mississippi where fish are plentiful. It is possible to view as many as 1000 birds at a single time, if you catch the right day, however often you will find them in groups of 15-20.
Trumpeter Swans
photographed are now frequently sited thanks to the Midwest Restoration Program that has raised in captivity these birds and then release them into the wild.
Several Great Egrets, a large white heron, was found and photographed along the banks of the Corp of Engineers park in Thompson, IL.
Other misc. birds shown in this gallery include Canadian Geese (now found almost everywhere), robins (who showed up this year while snow was still on the ground) and sparrows (which are very common birds in the midwest).
